So menopause is a time when we know that ovarian function declines and we see declining oestrogen, and this is the time when women develop vasomotor symptoms. We have known for centuries that oestrogen plays a key role in the development of vasomotor symptoms, and we've known that giving oestrogen back helps vasomotor symptoms. We've known that for a long time. What we've also known though, is that all women go through menopause, all women have declining estradiol levels, but not all women experience vasomotor symptoms. And so this has led us to question, is oestrogen the entire cause of the vasomotor symptoms? And more recently we've learned through great basic science research that it is in fact more complicated than just oestrogen. Oestrogen certainly plays a role, but there's more to the story.
