Results from a multi-center Phase III study in China comparing AWcorna, a mRNA vaccine from Abogen Biosciences, with Sinovac Biotech Ltd.’s older inactivated virus-based vaccine CoronaVac showed AWcorna as a booster induced a 66.59-fold increase against wild-type SARS-CoV-2, and that its protection continued past 14 and 28 days.

The results, published on the pre-peer review site medRxiv, also showed that neutralization antibody titers against the Delta variant increased significantly after a third dose booster either with AWcorna or CoronaVac - but the measurements in the AWcorna groups were 5.1- and 6.5-fold higher than for CoronaVac at 14 and 28 days post-booster.

Safety-wise, a total of eight subjects of the 200 enrolled in the AWcorna group (4%) reported fever, while 7% of the 100 enrolled in the CoronaVac group reported headache and 4% reported fever as the most frequent systemic adverse events. No serious adverse events were reported in either group.

The trial size was small and efficacy needs to be further determined.
