The theme for International Nurses Day 2017 is Nursing: A voice to lead – Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th each year, the date which also marks the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) will produce and distribute their 2017-themed International Nurses Day (IND) Kit ? a toolkit, comprising a website, video and a social media campaign. The toolkit is directed towards the nursing profession, the general population and policy makers themselves and aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable development goals in Nursing and the efforts being made towards achieving them. This is a valuable educational resource which will be used by nurses everywhere.

It is a shocking fact that nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants are twice as likely to suffer financial hardship than the average member of the public. Two in five nurses have a physical or mental health condition expected to last longer than a year. International Nurses Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the hard work, long hours, and emotional strain that every nurse takes on in their vocation.
