International Stammering Awareness Day 2017
International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD) occurs every 22nd October to remind us to get talking about stammering. A stammer, often referred to as a ‘stutter’ or being ‘tongue-tied’, is caused by a neurological condition and is often genetically inherent. Stammering not only affects the speech but also has a psychological impact. One common characteristic of a ‘stammerer’ is to avoid certain words which have caused problems previously by choosing less problematic synonyms.
There is currently no ‘cure’ for stammering but various forms of therapy and intervention at a younger age have proven to drastically reduce the impact of stammering on the individuals. To read about how stammering has affected real people, read some of their ‘speaking-out’ stories.
Stammering.org calls for the public to get involved by supporting local events, donating, attending events and supporting the fundraising walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats – Stamwalk.
As part of International Stammering Awareness Day, the ISAD Online Conference 2017 is live, including the opportunity to comment and submit questions.
