Urology Week 2017 draws to a close
This week has been 'Urology Week 2017'. Urology Week is an initiative of the European Association of Urology (EAU) whose aim is to increase public awareness of urological conditions.
Urology is the branch of medicine which deals with surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract and of the male reproductive organs. As such, the organs of focus are the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (which encompass the testes, prostate and penis).
Prostate cancer and urinary incontinence are the best known examples of urological disease among the general population with nocturnal enuresis being a fairly common disorder in childhood.
Urology Week 2017 brought together national urological societies, specialists, nurses, patients and their families. For healthcare professionals it has served as a platform to share their patients’ experiences and to consolidate and promote best practice in treatment. Furthermore, it has been an opportunity to reach out and educate the public on the importance of checking their bodies, to recognise symptoms, to seek advice and accept treatment for their urological disorders. Armed with knowledge of what to look for will serve people well, to embrace the mantra going forward that prevention is better than cure.
