Get "heart-healthy" on World Heart Day
World Heart Day is commemorated on 29th September each year. It is a global initiative of the World Heart Federation to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, the world’s biggest killer.
Heart diseases such as stroke, heart failure and heart attack arise due to four main risk factors: unhealthy diet, tobacco use, lack of physical activity and use of alcohol. It is estimated that at least 80 percent of premature deaths from these heart conditions could be avoided by addressing these poor lifestyle choices and adopting a healthier way of life.
This year the focus is on creating a ‘heart-healthy’ environment in which to live, work and play.
On World Heart Day, the objective is to educate people to make healthy choices. The message is that taking regular exercise, reducing alcohol intake, giving up smoking and eating more fruit and vegetables will go a long way to achieving good heart health.
