Cordis division of Johnson & Johnson said it won CE marking for its Renlane Renal Denervation System, and doctors in Europe are already using the device to treat drug-resistant hypertension. Renlane uses a helical-shaped, irrigated, multi-electrode ablation catheter combined with a multichannel radio-frequency ablation system. It is minimally invasive, performed through a catheter that is inserted through a small groin incision that runs up to the renal arteries through a blood vessel in the leg.

"The novel technological design of the Renlane Renal Denervation Catheter with its configuration of five electrodes and irrigated technology, allows for shorter procedure duration, sparing of contrasting dye and likely more protection of the endothelium," said Hannes Reuter, M.D., University of Cologne, Germany. "The design of the catheter also makes handling the device very easy."
