Studies show evidence of benefits of statins for Dementia
Two studies presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2013 provide evidence that statin drugs may be linked to lower rates of Dementia in older people. One study of 58,000 patients showed evidence of a dose-related inverse relationship between statin use and new-onset nonvascular Dementia. A second study in 5221 patients with Atrial Fibrillation recorded a reduced incidence of Dementia in patients taking statins compared with those who weren't on the treatment.
These results seem to contradict earlier studies: two randomised trials, PROSPER in which elderly patients took pravastatin, and the LEAD study in which patients with early Alzheimer's disease used atorvastatin, did not provide any evidence of benefits on risk for Dementia.
