Early management of patients with a head injury

This guideline makes recommendations on the early management (first 72 hours of care) of adults and children with head injury. It addresses the patient journey through: prehospital assessment; referral to hospital; imaging; indications for admission and discharge from hospital; in patient observations; discharge planning and advice; referral to neurosurgery; and follow up.

This guideline will be of particular interest to anyone who has responsibility for the care of patients with a head injury, including those who work in prehospital care, general practice, emergency departments, radiology, surgical and critical care specialties, paediatric and rehabilitation services, members of voluntary organisation and patients.
